INTERVIEW WITH AL RIO
SUPERSTAR ARTIST CHATS WITH RAGING CHEETAH VIA EMAIL INTERVIEW
March.06.2008
By Alan Y. Shih
Staff Writer
Many comics fans who've flipped through pages of Gen 13, Vampirella, Dv8 and WildC.A.T.S can immediately recognize the lavish, beautiful art that is Al Rio. Those who have experienced his distinctly playful work know that he is especially adept at celebrating the female form. Mr. Rio recently granted RAGING CHEETAH a correspondence interview via email from Brazil. We would like to extend our sincere gratitude to Terry at Al Rio Art, for making this interview possible. Terry, many thanks for your kindness and generosity!
RC: Who are your two favorite characters to draw, and what is it about them that appeals to you? Al Rio: Spider-Man was my favorite from the beginning. I could
identify with the character.
I was very touched and shocked at the death of Gwen Stacey. I was
very sad and lonely. It seemed like a reality for me.
Daredevil also commanded my attention with his daily and very realistic
stories.
RC: What reference materials do you like to use as inspirations for your drawings and commissions - photos, magazines, live models?
Al Rio: I work a little with a live model, but would like to do it more. But my main point of reference is magazines, illustrative books, films and internet.
RC: What has been the most daring art commission request you've received? And did you draw it?
Al Rio: Every request has it's difficulties. I think the worst is when I wake up uninspired. Soon the inspiration comes and the problem is solved.
RC: The drawings and pinups on your Website are all very beautiful. Have you noticed or have you deliberately changed any aspects of your style
over the years? If so, how?
Al Rio: That is an interesting question. If you know my work, you know that I am half crazy. I am always trying something new. I don't like to always draw
the same way or follow the same rules. I like new styles and to create for me is not a challenge, it is pure pleasure.
RC: Any plans on attending a future Comic-Con in the U.S? We'd love to see you and support you! Al Rio:
I've desire to do that a long time. But I just do not have the opportunity.
Because travel is expensive from Brazil. I would adore to do it (again) one day. Once I went to Chicago and liked it a lot.
