Raging Cheetah continues our series of exclusive interview content: THE COLLECTOR'S SERIES! We sit down with the fans - veteran collectors of comics, original artwork, commissions and convention sketches, to hear their stories and share their experiences from shows like Wizard World, Anime Expo and Comic-Con. So if you're a fan of comic book shows worldwide, read on!
RC: Please tell us where you are located, and what comic book shows you regularly attend. Justin: I live in Redlands, CA. I have been attending the San Diego Comic Convention every year since 1988. I have also been to Wizard World LA the last three years, Wondercon in 1996 returned for a second time this year. I love the San Diego Comic Con but it has been getting too packed these last few years.
RC: Do you have a favorite?
Justin: Wizard World LA has been my favorite recently.
RC: Your CAF gallery is heavy on Marvel characters. What books are you following right now?
Justin: Captain America is probably my favorite book right now followed by New Avengers, Iron Fist and Daredevil. I am also a big X-Men fan and quickly becoming a fan of the new X-Force title.
RC: You've got quite a few beautiful J. Scott Campbell pieces. Which piece is your favorite one, and why?
Justin: That's a very hard question. I don't know if I can pick a favorite one, I love them all. The G.I. Joe Wizard prelim is a top favorite because of the fact that it features G.I. Joe and I am a huge Joe fan and secondly it features the first sketch I ever got from J. Scott Campbell. I met Jeff for the second time at the San Diego Comic Convention in 2001 and he was kind enough to draw a Snake Eyes sketch on the top of the board for the Wizard G.I. Joe prelim for me. It was my first and thankfully, not the last time I got to watch J. Scott Campbell draw in-person. Another favorite piece would be the inked Black Cat commission I was able to get at Wizard World LA this year.

RC: Leinil Yu versus David Finch. Which single character would you have them both draw in a Throwdown competition. Who wins?
Justin: Another tough question. Leinil Yu and David Finch are two of my favorite artists. I would have to choose Captain America for them to draw and after a tough battle Leinil would squeak by with the win. But oh what a battle it would be.
RC: Your Finch Snake Eyes commission is nice! How much time did he spend on it?!
Justin: I actually got that one through David Finch's website so I'm not sure how much time he spent on it. When I got it I emailed David's wife and told her how happy I was with it. She emailed back saying it was nice to hear good feedback from people on David's art. Some day I would love to get a full body Snake Eyes commission from David.
RC: Give me your favorite sketch-related experience so far.
Justin: Getting my first convention sketch from Jim Lee back in 1990 at the San Diego Con was a great experience not only because it was my first sketch but also because I have yet to get a second sketch from Jim Lee.
Another favorite experience was getting a Joe Mad! sketch at Wizard World LA this year. My wife and I were in the front of the line for his signing at the Marvel booth and he started doing sketches for the first couple of people and when it was my wife's turn Joe started drawing, at the same time Jeph Loeb who was sitting next to Joe Mad told him he shouldn't be sketching because they would never get through the line if he did so my wife's sketch was the last he did. Joe Mad told me to be at his signing later that day and he would do a sketch for me. I got in his line for a second time and again after sketching for the first two people someone put a sign up that said "NO SKETCHES." I wasn't going to let that slow mw down and I waited my turn and ended up talking Joe Mad into doing a sketch for me.
RC: Not to bring up bad memories, but what's the worst experience you've had while getting a sketch or commission? No need to give names on this one.
Justin: The worst experiences for me have been in commissioning an artist online for a commission and have to wait months or even years after paying to get the commission. And it's not the amount of time that's the worst part it's being told by the artist that the art is completed when it's not or that the art has been shipped when it hasn't. I'm actually in the process right now of waiting for a completed piece that I paid for six months ago and when I saw the artist in-person at a convention he told me that the art was already mailed and I should have it in a week. Being lied to is the worst part. Just be honest and let me know that the art isn't ready yet. That's the best thing an artist can do.
RC: In your opinion, who is the flat-out best artist in comics today?
Justin: J. Scott Campbell.
RC: Who is the brightest up-and-coming artist?
Justin: Jonboy Meyers, Harvey Toliabo, Chad Hurd.
RC: Next comic show we'll likely be seeing you at?
Justin: San Diego Comic Convention.
RC: See you there!
